Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. (commonly called Warner Bros or simply WB) is an American entertainment company that produces film, television and music entertainment. The company’s name originates from the four founding Warner brothers Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack.

On April 4, 1923, with help from a money loaned to Harry by his banker Motley Flint, they formally incorporated as Warner Brothers Pictures, Incorporated. (As late as the 1960s, Warner Bros. claimed 1905 as its founding date.)

Warner Bros. Entertainment is headquartered at the Warner Bros. Studios lot, 142 acres in Burbank, California, which is considered one of the foremost motion picture and television production and post-production facilities in the world and home to 35 soundstages (including one of the world’s tallest stages, which has an in-ground tank capable of holding more than two million gallons of water). In addition, Warner Bros. Studio Facilities is responsible for managing the company’s studio in the U.K. It is also the home of Warner Bros. Studio Tour London—The Making of Harry Potter, which has become one of the U.K.’s most popular tourist attractions since opening in March 2012.

In 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures grossed $4.73 billion in global box office ($1.56 billion domestic, $3.17 international), marking the sixth time the Studio has crossed the $4 billion in worldwide box office. For the 14th consecutive year, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment was, once again, the industry’s leader, with 17 percent market share, and was number one in the overall sell-through and electronic sell-through categories.

Characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester, and Porky Pig, became central to the company’s image for many decades. Bugs in particular remains a mascot to Warner Bros. The success of the compilation film, The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie in 1980, featuring the archived film of these characters prompted Warner Brothers to organize Warner Bros. Animation as a new production division to restart production of original material. Warner Brothers productions including the TV programmes and cartoons and some of the films created are mostly aimed at young children and the cartoons that included some of the famous characters like Bugs Bunny became very popular when released on TV.

Today, the vast Warner Bros. library, one of the most prestigious and valuable in the world, consists of more than 61,000 hours of programming, including nearly 6,500 feature films and 3,000 television programs comprised of tens of thousands of individual episodes.

Warner Bros. was already the owner of extensive music-publishing holdings, whose tunes had appeared in countless cartoons and television shows. In 1958, the studio launched Warner Bros. Records. Initially the label released recordings made by their television stars – whether they could sing or not – and records based on television soundtracks.
